President hosts encounter with Muslims on Saturday

  • Continues State House interaction with religious leaders

Georgetown , GINA, November 10, 2005

President Bharrat Jagdeo will tomorrow host Muslim leaders at a post-Ramadan event at State House, where they would be given the opportunity to raise concerns with President Jagdeo and Government Ministers.

This disclosure was made by the President’s Information Liaison Robert Persuad.

Muslims worldwide observed Ramadan during the past month, during which spiritual devotion and material sacrifices were made to achieve spiritual and moral upliftment.

The period ended with special festivities on the Eid-Ul-Fitr (Day of Feasting) when families and friends rejoiced for having completed the commandment of Allah through successful abstinence.

Eid-Ul-Fitr was observed in Guyana on November 4.

The religious encounter with Muslims follows the Head of State’s hosting the Diwali Utsav at State House on October 22, when Hindu leaders raised their concerns at an interactive session after being entertained with a cultural programme.

The President will host the Christian community in December in observance of Christmas, Persaud said.

Over the years of his Presidency President Jagdeo has given religious groups many opportunities to share their views on national issues, many of which were integrated into national policies and programmes.

The President has been hospitable to the three main religious groups by opening the lawns of State House for them to host religious encounters. This dates back to his inauguration on March 31, 2001; where he signalled his commitment to include religious leaders in the process of governance.

“I want to assure the people of Guyana, who have deep religious convictions that I will seek guidance and advice from our religious leaders, as we try to breakdown barriers and create a more compassionate society,” he said at his inauguration

That commitment stands strong today.
