President tours Linden , visits investment sites - August 19, 2004.
Efforts to attract investments to the mining town of Linden have been boosted by a Chinese firm, Karlem, which is seeking to expand its operations. Today, President Bharrat Jagdeo toured the operations during his visit to Linden .
Karlem began work in Linden about six weeks ago. It is a wood processing project that exports to China . When it is fully developed some 150 containers of wood will be exported monthly.
At present the company contracts 70 local loggers but is requesting more land. President Jagdeo agreed to meet the company and the Guyana Forestry Commission next week.
To date, US$2 million has been invested which will eventually create 500 jobs.
Danny Chan, an executive with the company said it's expansion programme is aimed at maximising the resources and generating economic activity in Linden .
The President also stopped at the Old Heed workshop which is also a potential investment site.
General Manager of Linmine Secretariat Horace James said that expressions of interest were received from two companies for wood processing. One was a local company and the other a Barbadian company. These are beign considered.
The President also stopped at Wisroc Junction where he had given $50 million in 2003 to build the road.
Residents sought further funding since the money has been utilised. It was used on works the private sector was supposed to have done.
The President said that should funds be available later in the year, he will try, but at present there is none available.
He also stopped at various communities in Linden , including Blueberry Hill, Silvertown and Amelia's Ward.
Residents raised several concerns and the President committed himself to return at a future date for general meetings with the communities.
He also committed himself to finding resources to repair the main street in Amelia's Ward.
