MESSAGE OF HIS EXCELLENCY, PRESIDENT
BHARRAT JAGDEO
ON THE OCCASION OF PHAGWAH 2003 - March
17, 2003
It is with the greatest of pleasure that I wish all Guyanese, especially our Hindu sisters and brothers a Happy Phagwah.
We are all aware of the messages of the Holi festival, more so the resuscitation of life, beauty and charm. This season reminds us or rather should recommit all of us to sacrifice, preservation of life, a sustainable environment and for us to work towards achievement of the highest goals in our respective pursuits.
We have much to learn from Prahalad, a mere child; he remained steadfast to his beliefs and was able to overcome all adversities. The Holi festival must therefore strengthen faith and encourage healing.
Thanksgiving is another important aspect of the festival of Holi. It is equally a time for caring, concern and to show the deepest compassion.
In Guyana, people of all religious and ethnic backgrounds share in the happy
spirit which Holi brings, thus eliminating enmity and selfishness. The atmosphere
is filled with love and harmony which we must all ensure remain beyond the festival.
Phagwah is also a time of sharing and welcoming guests. I urge you to join in
the celebration of the festival with the eagerness so that the bond of friendship,
unity and determination will release more success to Guyana.
Happy Holi to all Guyanese.
