EID-UL-FITR MESSAGE OF HIS EXCELLENCY, PRESIDENT BHARRAT
JAGDEO - December 6th, 2002
Once again Muslims throughout Guyana join the millions around the world in
celebrating the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr, which climaxes the period of fasting
of the Holy Month of Ramadan. On behalf of my Government, I extend to the Guyanese
community, more especially the Muslim community, sincere greetings on the auspicious
day of Eid-ul-Fitr.
Eid is an occasion for the highest gratitude and is a day of delight for all
not withstanding status. This festival marks the end of a month-long sacrifice
of the joys of life with the intention of promoting good and a just society.
Emphasis is placed on eradicating wrong.
Islam, like other religions reject actions and thought which contributes, to
crime and injustices. The Muslim community has always advocated all that is
good and resist oppressive forces that strive to divide over people.
Ramadan has challenged us our Muslim brothers and sisters to re-look carefully
at how they fulfill their duties, their obligations, their responsibilities
and how they can be fulfilled by them. This contemplation should be as an inspiration
to all Guyanese.
Muslims in our country have always demonstrated their involvement in practical
ways of strengthening society, especially by helping the less fortunate. We
must learn from Ramadan and Eid mutual respect and work to build peace and security
and safety for all people.
As the appearance of the new moon brings to a close the Holy Month of Ramadan,
and the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr, I extend to all our Muslims a blessed celebration
and peace, health, and prosperity in the year ahead.
