MESSAGE OF HIS EXCELLENCY BHARRAT JAGDEO, PRESIDENT OF GUYANA ON THE OCCASION OF
EID-UL-FITR 2004
Muslims in Guyana join with millions around the world in celebrating the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the end of the Holy Month of Ramadhan. On behalf of my Government, I extend to all Guyanese, especially our Muslim brothers and sisters, sincere greetings on the auspicious day of Eid-ul-Fitr.
The fasting during Ramadhan is one of the pillars of Islam. The discipline, sacrifice and the giving of Zakaat (charity), which is required of Muslims especially during this period, should inspire others.
This Eid-ul-Fitr is observed at a time when our country and the world are faced with myriad challenges. Islam is often misrepresented and misunderstood. We must use this Eid-ul-Fitr to celebrate this great religion which share values compatible with all of humanity. Muslims and non-Muslims must use the occasion to strengthen their understanding and appreciation of this faith.
As the appearance of the new moon brings to a close the Month of Ramadhan and the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr, I extend to all Muslims, a blessed celebration with peace, good health and prosperity in the period ahead.
