MESSAGE OF HIS
EXCELLENCY, PRESIDENT BHARRAT JAGDEO ON
THE OCCASION OF DEEPAVALI
On behalf of the Government of Guyana, I extend Deepavali greetings to all Guyanese, and especially to our Hindu brothers and sisters.
Deepavali – the Festival of Lights – symbolises: the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. Guyanese, Hindus and non-Hindus, should regard the Festival of Deepavali as a Festival of Hope.
This Festival
as symbolized by the Mother Laxmi also represents wealth and prosperity and
can be linked to the development and growth of Guyana, a goal in which all
Guyanese are stakeholders.
Deepavali transcends all barriers and ushers in enthusiasm among Hindus and
non-Hindus alike. An increasing number of Guyanese of all backgrounds participate
in the festival’s grand splendour. The countrywide Deepavali motorcades
bring out thousands and similar numbers on Deepavali night throng villages
to witness the beautifully illuminated buildings. This no doubt is another
reminder of the religious tolerance of our people who belong to different
religious faiths.
I urge all Guyanese that in keeping with this festival we continue to work together in the spirit of love and unity.
Shubh Deepavali!
