VISIT BY PARLIAMENTARY DELEGATION OF INDIA
Thirteen MPs from the Indian Parliament will be paying a goodwill visit to Guyana from May 30 th to June 2, 2005.
The MPs delegation will be led by the governing coalition Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Urban Development of India, the Honourable Ghalam Nabi Azad.
The delegation will have a packed programme including courtesy calls on President Bharrat Jagdeo, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds and Minister Rohee and the Leader of the Parliamentary Opposition in Guyana, Mr. Robert Corbin.
Discussions will also be held with the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Mr. Reepu Daman Persaud and the Speaker Mr. Ramkarran.
The President will host a state luncheon at State House in honour of the visiting delegation.
CELEBRATING THE 39 TH ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDENCE
Guyana celebrated its 39 th Anniversary of Independence on May 26, 2005.
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport executed a wide programme of activities in Georgetown and the Regions of Guyana.
The centrepiece of the Anniversary celebrations was the Flag Raising ceremonies in the ten (10) Administrative Regions at which Cabinet Ministers delivered the feature addresses in the other nine (9) Administrative Regions while the large turnout at the National Park was addressed by the President.
Georgetown enjoyed the novelty of a Costume Parade on Independence Day which was enlivened by a stage show at the National Park on Independence Day itself.
THE 2005 PUBLIC SECTOR INVESTMENT PROGRAMME
Cabinet reviewed the 1 st quarter performance of the PSIP 2005. This year the PSIP included 44 projects with total finances of $273 M GYD.
$9.4 B was locally financed, G$17.9 was foreign financed and G$2.6 B was provided as grants.
Multilateral financing was the order of the day, all of which was concessionary is low interest rates and lengthy amortisation .
Economic Infrastructure and Social Sector Investments occupied the top ranking among national sectors in which investments were dedicated.
Special attention was paid to the largest portfolio, the IDB with regards to the rehabilitation of the Highway System from Timehri to Moleson Creek.
Note was taken of the completion of the bridges component highlighted by the ceremonial opening of the new Mahaica Bridge by President Jagdeo on Independence Day.
The progress in investment activities in the Water Sector was noted as well as the dominant grant financing by the EU and IDA.
Minister Baksh reported on his successful negotiations on IDA Grant financing for large water projects in Regions 2, 3 and 5.
Minister Jeffrey reported on the implementation of the BEAMS project.
Cabinet’s overall view was that the execution of the 2005 PSIP was on target.
